Physiotherapists have studied the structure and movement of the human body to degree, Masters or doctorate level. We assess, diagnose and treat many musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary or neurological conditions. You might see us due to an acute injury or chronic condition or because you want to retain your strength as you age.

You’ll find physios working in hospitals, community health centres, sports clubs, aged care facilities and in private practice, as we do here at Vitalis Physiotherapy.

Once we’ve assessed you, we design an individual program of care to treat any current injury or overuse and to strengthen your body to reduce the risk of further injury.

There are many good reasons to see a physio ranging from sports injuries to chronic diseases. You might:

  • Want to improve your flexibility, fitness or strength
  • Have noticed bruising, swelling, soreness or stiffness
  • Feel like your joints are giving way or your muscles are weak
  • Be an expectant mum suffering from pregnancy aches and pains
  • Be a new mum recovering from birth

  • Be dealing with growing pains
  • Have a chronic condition like diabetes, osteoarthritis, MS or cancer.

It is likely. The body heals slowly and we usually like to see you again to find out how you’re going.

Follow your physio’s advice. If you’ve been given stretches or exercises to do, then please do them! We’re able to perform some amazing treatments during your sessions but often the best long-term success is achieved by you strengthening your body through regular, targeted exercises and stretches.

Remember that healing and recovery takes time and not everyone heals/recovers at the same rate. If anytime during your care, you do not feel that you

We are registered with most of the private health funds, which means you can claim your rebate on the spot. We are not a preferred provider and we’re happy to explain why.

Some health insurance companies have developed preferred provider schemes with allied health practitioners like physiotherapists. The Australian Physiotherapy Association does not support preferred provider schemes.

Preferred providers are not offering a higher standard of care or more experienced staff. They are just agreeing to bring their fees in line with the amounts set by the health fund. We believe this is a race to the bottom that devalues physiotherapists and gives health insurance companies undue influence over patient care.

Here at Vitalis Physiotherapy, we want to give you a superior service. We value our patients and our time. And we trust the advice of our professional body, the Australian Physiotherapy Association. So, no, we are not a preferred provider. We do not want our business model to be driven by what a health fund will or won’t pay for. We want Vitalis Physiotherapy to provide quality care based on clinical need in a sustainable practice.

Only if your GP has listed physio services as part of your Chronic Disease Management plan for you.

A Medicare referral from your doctor means we can bulk bill up to five physiotherapy appointments each year under Chronic Disease Management plan (EPC Care Plan).

You will need to get a special referral called the “EPC plan” from your doctor before Medicare allows us to bulk bill physiotherapy visits.

Medicare provides your doctor with a strict eligibility criteria. This includes:

  • Pain or symptoms more than six months,
  • Complex injury requiring more than one health professionals,
  • Completed referral from doctor.

Your doctor will the following information to send us a referral:

We want to help as many people as possible, with all their musculoskeletal and sports injury needs, so Vitalis Physiotherapy is very pleased to be able to accept and process Medicare rebates for physiotherapy consultations.

Do I Need a Referral?

That depends. If you’re coming as a private patient, you don’t need a referral to see a physio. You can just make an appointment and attend.

You do need a referral from your GP if:

  • Your need for physio relates to an insurance claim after a car crash or workplace injury (CTP)
  • Your need for physio relates to an insurance claim after a workplace injury (WorkCover/Workers’ Comp)
  • Your physio visits are to be subsidised by Medicare as part of Chronic Disease Management (EPC Care Plan)
  • You’re claiming through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).

Most patients need 5-8 sessions sessions but everyone is different. The right number of treatments depends on the type, location and persistence of your injury. Your sessions will be 5-7 days apart to allow time for your body to make progress between treatments.

What Does It Cost?

  • Please call us if you need to discuss costs. We’ll be happy to tell you our initial consultation fees plus relevant item numbers so you can call your health fund and ask about the dollar value of their rebate. Alternatively, we can provide a quote for the customers at our clinic, you will need to bring your health card with you.
  • We provide discounts for Concession Card Holders. We provide a $10 discount for pensioners without private health cover.
  • You pay once your consultation finishes. We accept cash, EFTPOS, Mastercard and Visa.
  • If you have extras cover with your Health Insurance, you should be able to claim physiotherapy services through your health fund. We process your claim on the spot. Please bring your private health card with you.

What Happens At My First Appointment?

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early so our friendly reception staff can gather some details from you.

Once it’s time for your appointment, you’ll come into our treatment room and we’ll get to know you. We’ll listen as you explain what’s brought you to us and how that injury or illness affects you. We’ll ask you questions about your overall health and we’ll review any X-rays or ultrasounds that you may have brought with you.

Then we’ll examine you. We may look at your posture, your movement, your muscle strength and your nerve function.

We’ll tell you why you’re in pain. And once we’ve diagnosed you, we’ll begin treating you. That might include massage or other treatments to reduce pain and improve movement. And it’ll probably involve teaching you some exercises to do at home. We’ll write our recommendations down for you (maybe even with some diagrams!) so you can remember what to do.
