AIS is caused by repeated compression at the front of the ankle joint, which may result in “joint capsule” or “synovium pinching”. The soft tissue becomes inflamed which generates pain in the ankle. In some cases, this repeated compression of the ankle joint can lead to osteophytes forming on the front of the tibia or talus bones.
Physical activities which require a lot of full dorsiflexion frequently results in a greater risk of developing AIS; examples of these include running and football.
