Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. It can affect one joint or multiple joints. It refers to over 100 different conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system. These include:
Arthritis is a common condition affecting almost 4 million Australians which is about 15% of the population.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type, other common types including rheumatoid, psoriatic, and gout. Osteoarthritis usually develops after 50 or 60 years of age, but may occur earlier. It also tends to be more prevalent in individuals who are overweight. The typical age for developing rheumatoid arthritis is between ages 30 and 50. It can, however, affect children, teens, and younger adults.
Arthritis has no cure but its symptoms can be managed with exercise, weight loss, lifestyle changes and appropriate medication.
Unfortunately, the causes of many types or arthritis are not known. It is suspected that most forms are caused by issues associated with the immune system; resulting in the body attacking its own tissues in the joints.Other forms may be caused by metabolic issues, such as those associated with gout. Arthritis may also be inherited.
Furthermore, environmental factors may also contribute to the development of some types of arthritis. These factors include, but are not limited to:
You also have an increased risk of developing this condition if you are a smoker and don’t participate in enough physical activity.
Lastly, arthritis may also be caused by an infection, this is called ‘reactive arthritis’. This particular branch is difficult to diagnose, and can develop at any age, however, is most common in younger populations. Reactive arthritis can last between a few weeks up to 6 months. Examples of conditions that can cause reactive arthritis include: systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriasis and Lyme disease.
Your symptoms may feel worse in the morning or with moving after an extended period of rest.
Certain types of arthritis can have symptoms not directly related to your joints:
