About the condition

What are Bunions?

Bunions are bony lumps that form on the outside of your big toe that cause pain and swelling. This condition occurs when some of the bones in your big toe move out of place causing the big toe to push into the other toes.

The usual onset of this condition is around 20-50 years of age, however can begin earlier or later with women more likely to develop bunions. Smaller bunions (bunionettes) can develop on the joint of your little toe.

Causes

What are the causes?

There is a genetic element to this condition; people are more likely to develop bunions if there is family history of the condition (thanks mum and dad!).

Other causes include:

  • Shoes with high heels
  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Arthritis in your feet
