A Hip Muscle Strain can cause pain and discomfort in and around the hip.

At Vitalis Physiotherapy, our treatment of hip muscle strains aim to:

What is a Hip Muscle Strain?

The hip is what’s known as a ‘ball-and-socket’ joint – here, muscles serve to support, cushion and facilitate upper leg movements. Muscles of the hips can also extend to, from or over the pelvis, groin, buttocks and upper leg (thighs)

Some of the major hip (or associated) muscles include:

  • Hip Flexors
  • Gluteals
  • Abductors & Adductors
  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings

A strain is classified as an injury to the muscle or tendons (thick, fibrous, connective tissue) as either a painful stretch, to a partial tear. Once injured, recurrence is likely, especially without proper therapeutic intervention.

What are the causes of a hip muscle strain?

The exact cause and severity of muscle strains can vary, however there are some common factors which may contribute, including:

  • Hip injuries – preexisting, acute or chronic, including dislocations, ligament tears, tendon tears/injury, etc.
    • Also: attempting to push limit/do too much – overload/overuse
  • Sports-related injuries – involving repetitive/sudden leg rotation, e.g., golf, hockey, running, dancing, etc.
    • or poor muscle warm-up before activity
  • General wear and tear of the hip structures (muscle/bone/tendon/tissue/ligaments/nerves) over time
  • Trauma – e.g. car accident, falls, etc.
  • Deconditioning or fatigue
  • Sudden force against the hip/movement of the upper leg
  • Preexisting structural abnormalities, like hip dysplasia

If you suspect you have a hip muscle strain, it is important to see a medical professional. You might also be referred for imaging tests to determine the cause and severity of the condition.

Physical therapy is highly beneficial in reducing associated symptoms and returning to the activities that you love. At Vitalis Physiotherapy, we tailor a unique treatment plan to aid in your recovery through:

  • Stretching, strengthening and/or conditioning exercises
  • Restoring range of movement
  • Postural improvement
  • Soft tissue mobilisations (massage)
  • Shockwave Therapy
  • Dry needling
