What is a Lisfranc Injury?

A Lisfranc Injury is a displacement of the metatarsals from the tarsus in your midfoot. The injury results from either direct or indirect trauma; it can be caused by something as simple as a twist and fall or by something more severe such as a fall from height.

There is a high rate of this condition amongst football and soccer players. Men are 2 to 4 times more likely to suffer from a Lisfranc Injury.

What are the causes?

A Lisfranc injury can commonly be misdiagnosed as a sprain, especially with a simple mechanism of a twist and fall.  So if you continue to have issues after having your ankle cleared from X-ray, its best to get a second opinion on the injury.

  • Low energy injury with twist and fall
  • Trauma to the foot ranging from sporting accident to more acute trauma
  • Usually stumbling over a plantar flexed or pointed foo

Symptoms will vary with severity of the injury.

  • Pain in your midfoot, sore to touch
  • Inability to weight bear
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Deformed shape in midfoot
  • Pain with moving the foot into pronation or ABDuction
