Episodes of BPPV can develop rapidly and last for only a few seconds, but they can last significantly longer. BPPV affects both men and women but is about 2-3 times more common in women.
BPPV develops when calcium carbonate particles move into your semicircular canals and become trapped. As your head position changes, the calcium carbonate particles roll around and push on cilia within your semicircular canals. Those cilia help transmit information about balance to your brain. BPPV develops when the cilia are stimulated by the rolling calcium carbonate particles causing you to feel like you are moving.
